Frequently Asked Questions

Website: www.unccalphasigs.com

Q: What are the benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority?

A: Supportive friends, leadership opportunities, philanthropic projects, community service, career opportunities, and becoming part of a worldwide network. This only begins the description of how being in a fraternity/sorority will positively affect your life; and membership is for life!

Q: What is the policy on hazing?

A: The University of North Carolina Charlotte has a strong, zero-tolerance policy regarding hazing for all of its student organizations. All members are educated on the dangers of such practices on an on-going basis. Hazing, or any activity that subjects members to harassment, ridicule, intimidation, physical exhaustion, or mental distress is entirely contrary to the purposes of the Greek Community and the University, and is not tolerated.

Q: How will my grades be impacted by fraternity/sorority membership?

A:  Ideally, they should shoot way up! Academics must be your first priority. The fraternity/sorority can offer support in time management, tutoring, study enhancement and incentives, and class assistance.

Q: How much does it cost to join a fraternity or sorority?

A: Each organization is self-supported through dues charged to all members. In the first year of membership, a few one-time expenses are assessed. After those initial payments are made, the only usually expenses will be regular dues. If housing is offered, lodging is competitive with other on-campus housing options. Many chapters offer payment plans to assistant their members.

Q: What is the time commitment for being involved with a fraternity or sorority?

A: Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires an investment of one’s time. Research has shown that involved college students are more likely to graduate and they report greater satisfaction with their college experience. Members will learn how to balance their academic, work, campus involvement, and social commitments.

Q: How do we find out more?

A:  Visit our office web site (www.greeklife.uncc.edu), individual chapter web sites, or feel free to call the Fraternity & Sorority Life Office at (704) 687-2635. We are here to help you!
